This summer, MarkSetBot had the honor of joining Spectrum Sailing at their Toledo camp, hosted by the welcoming North Cape Yacht Club. Spectrum Sailing creates inclusive sailing opportunities for children with autism, and the Toledo program—now in its third year—has quickly become a highlight of their national tour.

Despite the unpredictable Michigan weather, from chilly winds to bursts of summer heat, the camp was filled with energy, determination, and smiles. Campers, families, volunteers, and staff came together for three incredible days on Lake Erie, proving once again how sailing can be a powerful vehicle for building confidence, friendships, and joy.

Bringing Technology to the Water

A highlight of the week was MarkSetBot’s hands-on demonstration of our GPS-enabled robotic buoys. Campers had the chance to see how technology is transforming sailing, making it more accessible and adaptable for all types of sailors. For many of the kids, watching a robotic buoy move across the water at the touch of a button was as exciting as steering a boat themselves. Their enthusiasm and curiosity reminded us exactly why we innovate—to make sailing smarter, easier, and more fun.

Spectrum Sailing’s Lasting Impact

Spectrum Sailing was founded by Scott Herman in Charleston, inspired by his son’s love of the water and the lack of opportunities designed for children with autism. Since then, the organization has grown into a nationwide program, with camps across the country giving hundreds of kids the chance to set sail each year.

The Toledo camp, in particular, holds special meaning as it takes place at Mr. Herman’s hometown yacht club. Families shared heartwarming stories about the difference the camp has made. One camper, who speaks only a few words, called it the “best camp ever.” Another parent said their child looks forward to sailing camp more than any other event of the year. These moments reflect what Spectrum Sailing is all about: creating success for every child, in their own way.

MarkSetBot’s Commitment

At MarkSetBot, we believe sailing should be for everyone. Supporting Spectrum Sailing aligns perfectly with our mission to use technology not just to advance the sport, but also to open doors for new sailors. Seeing the campers interact with our buoys and discover how innovation can enhance their time on the water was inspiring, and we’re grateful to play a small part in Spectrum Sailing’s incredible work.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with Spectrum Sailing and helping create even more opportunities for young sailors to learn, grow, and thrive.
