The M32 fleet has long been on the cutting-edge of sailing. First created in 2011, the M32 has seen rapid growth with large fleets in both Europe and North America. With boats that frequently reach speeds of 20 knots, it’s no surprise that sailors want their race course technology to keep up with their fast-paced sailing. One of the first advancements they added was using MarkSetBot to manage their race course. The M32’s unique course configuration, as well as their speed, made traditional marks difficult and frustrating to use.
Over the last three years, the M32 fleet has worked with MarkSetBot to create new race course configurations and app features that improve racing for them and other fleets and clubs. For Dave Doucet, Director of M32 North America, using Bots has been an extremely welcomed addition. “I am able to adjust the course with just a few taps, which is easy and keeps racing moving,” he noted.
Aside from MarkSetBots, the M32 fleet recently started working with Vakaros, using their RaceSense technology. This cutting-edge technology streamlines the starting sequence by transmitting OCS calls and provides sailors with speed, heading, and distance-to-line data. In fact, in conjunction with Bots, the M32s ran their first fully automated race course this past fall at their 2023 World Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.
New technology is not the only groundbreaking aspect of the M32 fleet. Recently, their goal of growing and developing the sport got a large boost with the addition of two new, young owners. Jake and Miles Julien are brothers who go to high school, can’t drink alcohol, and win World Championships. They joined their father Bobby Julien, a long-time member of the fleet, and quickly showed that age is but a number. Jake and his Rated-X team had a dominant 2023 season, winning the North Americans, Winter Series, Summer Series, and best of all, the World Championship.
The 2024 season kicked off last month in Miami with the help of MarkSetBot and Vakaros, and will race again February 2-5. Stay up-to-date on all the M32 action by visiting their website. And click here to learn more about how you can improve your race course by adding MarkSetBots!
